Dave Chappelle presents a Brooklyn neighborhood with its very own once-in-a-lifetime free block party. In addition to Chappelle, the roster of artists includes Kanye West, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Dead Prez, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, the Roots, Cody ChesnuTT, Big Daddy Kane, and - reunited for their first performance in over seven years - the Fugees. Includes private rehearsals footage and Chappelle in the small Ohio town he calls home, where he wanders through town handing out golden tickets to invite several dozen citizens to join the party, providing transportation and lodging for their visit to Brooklyn. Ohio's Central State University marching band makes the trip and kicks off the festivities at the intersection of Quincy and Downing Streets. A diverse crowd and Chappelle's freestyle wit guides them (and us) through a celebration of music and comedy, history and community.

It is something of a love letter to all things hip hop and New York....[T]he sheer enthusiasm of the musicians, often collaborating with each other spontaneously, lends the film a winning nostalgia.
Chappelle is the perfect host, effortlessly improvising before and between acts....You won't just wish you'd been there -- you'll feel like you really were.
Being a fan of Chappelle I rented this thinking it was a film version of his TV show, I was wrong. Instead what I found was a musical docu-film kinda thing. I was surprised to find the film highly entertaining even though it was a hip-hop gig and I can't say I'm the biggest fan, but as a music lover it was excellent, especially the performances in the second half of the film.
So, if youre a hip-hop fan - Rent this! If youre a live concert fan - Rent this! , But if your looking for a Comedy - Don't Bother!
Wish I'd had a golden ticket to this concert which is well captured. Cleverly it adds in the build up to the party and this is the best bit, with Ohio residents being delighted with their good fortune - the marching band is a special treat. The concert is captured quite well and gets a sense of atmosphere across mainly because we already care about some of the characters as they watch. I thought the Jill Scott set was the best and Kanye West was good - and you could hear all the words which makes a change at a rap concert.
A film by Michel Gondry which is still in the post-production stage has been given an early review by writers for movie gossip website Ain't It Cool News. Gondry, who directed the mind-boggling classic Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and hilarious music documentary Dave Chappelle's Block Party, is currently completing Be Kind Rewind, starring Mos Def and Jack Black. The film tells the story of Jerry, whose brain becomes magnetised and erases all the videotapes in a rental store, forcing... Read more
