23rd July 2010
David (Keir Dullea) is checked into a mental institution by his mother. He has a fear of being touched and an obsession with time and death. He meets a girl called Lisa (Janet Margolin) who suffers from schizophrenia who he falls in love with...
Lovely film directed by the great Frank Perry, its one of those you just stumble upon and I'm glad I did. David seems to have some OCD issues and a fear of relationships and Dullea is great as someone who's only forms of expression are either blankness, anger or tears. Margolin is eminently lovable as Lisa/Muriel who has a dissociative need to talk in rhyme. When she smiled my heart went pitter-pat.
'What do you see
when you look at me?'
'I see a girl who looks like a pearl.
I see a pearl of a girl'
Its got some lovely black and white cinematography and kept me riveted this afternoon. There's a great dream sequence as well. A rare find and I'll have to stop going on about it now.
It moved me and I'm made of granite.
Don't miss out on it.
