David Oistrakh
By a customer from England , 11 Apr 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
I knew very little about David Oistrakh when I borrowed this DVD, although I had heard him play often enough. So this film taught me a lot about his childhood and background. He seems to have remained very loyal to his country inspite of the sometimes a poor treatment.
I enjoyed the interviews too, and was particularlyu interested with his involment with Yehudi Menuhin and hearing them play together.- Was this review helpful to you?

(4)David Oistrakh, propaganda machine
By thought (4 reviews) from Caernarfon , 28 Sep 2009Amazing fantastic awesome.
Before I took this dvd out, i had only ever heard about the great russian violinist. I didnt know who he was or anything. This DVD totally changed my perception of music as a propaganda machine.
Answered many historical questions, and was a fantastic introduction to David Oistrakh, and his 'loyalty' to soviet russia.
My young daughter also sat and watched it with me, and she loved the way he interacted with the other violists, and she would sit still and gaze every time he played, and would then return to her playing when the 'interviews' occured.. to stop and listen to the music once more..- Was this review helpful to you?

Customer Review
By a customer from UK , 23 Jun 2008This documentary offers just sufficient extracts from Oistrakh's playing to encourage one to go to the many audio recordings available so that you can hear just what a wonderful musician he was. The commentaries by Oistrakh's son, Igor, and his friends and fellow musicians, including Menuhin, Rozhdestvensky and Rostropovich, demonstrate that, despite his tacit support for the Soviet regime (which he believed had given him the opportunity to develop his talent) Oistrakh was a deeply sincere and lovable man, and a musician of genius.- Was this review helpful to you?
