    [Highly rated reviewer]

Only worth it to see how effects have moved on...

Having read the other critic reviews about this film I was genuinely excited about seeing this original, especially given other films from the era that caused social shockwaves.

I have to say though that I spent the majority of the film either laughing at it (not with it) because the 'gore' mentioned in other reviews consists of vivid red paing squirting from severed limbs (something you'd generally see in a French & Saunders send up etc) or cringing at the dreadful wooden acting.

Overall not impressed and if anything it has restored a bit of my faith in modern film-making - the remake is, for once, a much better film.

  • Many are missing its validity & relevance...

I think given this films year of making etc that it is still a classic in its own right. It has tongue in cheek humour, yet in another way has many parallels to modern society... just as much now as back in '78. I feel many are missing its validity, relevance and even just the basic 'entertainment' factor - going by a lot of reviews on here anyway. OK so some of the effects aren't (obviously) up to today's standard, BUT! as per above, that's somewhat missing the point! I watched the newer version recently and although that was watchable / enjoyable, I don't personally think it is as good overall as this version... as always though, 'horses for coarses'.

I gave this film 5 stars purely for the entertainment quality.

If you think this will be all blood & brains think again. Whilst there is a bit of gore, I personally, found it all to be highly comical. Maybe back in the 70's this was deemed scary but by todays standards this would be rated a 12 at best (minus a few swear words).

But still, its a good film with a anti-comsumerism message and how humans behave in a crisis and that makes the film worth watching.

Reading reviews written by others it is just a little disappointing to see that most of the premise behind this movie is lost on this audience. Horror fans expecting gore and little else will be most disappointed the effects look dated that cannot be disputed. However the critique it places on society at the time is still relevant today. In summary I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for mindless murder and gore if however you enjoy something with more thought and you somehow haven't seen this movie already then give it a shot.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHide

This film is completely laughable and vastly inferior to the 1968 Night of the Living Dead.

The storyline just did not make sense either.

What undermined the horror of the storyline was that the zombies were by and large not frightening or threatening at all. The lack of menace throughout the film was its main failing.

For most of the film, killing a zombie was easy for the four people in the shopping centre. All it took to 'kill' them was a single gunshot to the head.

Also, if three/four people could 'kill' hundreds of zombies by themselves, then why was the shopping centre abandoned, with fully stocked shops?

Moreover, towards the end of the film, the zombies, without appearing to get faster or stronger or smarter, suddenly started killing live humans at will, including the gang that raided the centre.

The absence of any standout shock or surprise moments was the last straw.

Hey hey hey, this film does not deserve one star or even a review from the peope who are only doing one thing when they watch this film, and that is ( trying to hard) you cant imagine the feeling moviegoers get when this stuff came out, it was an event..I dont think you dudes born after 90 can appreciate the idea these films were meant to be exactly what they are and no more, as for the modern re-make been better ,, your crazy.
