A more expensive remake of George A. Romero's horror movie that is just another example of Hollywood consuming its past for no good reason; there's no life in these zombies even though they can move at speed.
The original Dawn of the Dead (1978) was a colourful mix of social commentary, black humour and gory effects work.... read more on Time Out
Well, it's called Dawn of the Dead and there's a shopping mall in it but that where the simularity between this and the 1978 original stop!
This is a good film! there's no doubt about that but what got me the most is that i've been watching Zombie films for years and they just do not run! they kind of wibble along like pensioners after a heavy nights drinking session on 'Wicked strength' lager! BUT!!!! in this new D.O.T.D. the run about.. NO! sprint about looking for a nice chewy victim! Thats my only gripe!
Watch this film, don't take it too seriously and you'll enjoy it! there's some good ideas in here; armour plated buses with 'oops!' mind that chainsaw! and 'Sniping the stars' from the rooftop! It's all good!
If you haven't seen the original then do so as it's good to compare!
I like zombie films. Always have done. But whilst this movie is very good it isn't good enough.
That isn't the fault of the actors, or the director, or the special effects.
It's down to the censor who, in the UK version I watched, has chopped 4 minutes and 55 seconds off the original run-time.
Now, 4 minutes and 55 seconds may not be a long time when there's dialogue, BUT YOU TRY HANGING UPSIDE DOWN FOR THAT LENTH OF TIME!
And you must remember, those 4 minutes and 55 seconds were probably all action. I know from my American friends that a sex scene was cut. It wasn't particularly "hot" but hell fire we're adults, and I am assured it was nothing pornograhic! But it was apparently pivotal to establishing a bond between two characters that is not in this version.
And to add insult to injury, there is another version going around outside the UK which runs at 1 hour 49 minutes!
That's nearly 14 minutes MORE than in the British version, which only runs at 1 hour 35 minutes plus a few seconds!
Because of that I give this film a "2". Without the cuts I'd probably give it 7 out of 7. I just don't like being treated like a kid, as if I am not "mature" enough to see a completed film!
Wow, what a film. I can honestly say that i have never watched a film as many times as this one!Firstly, the acting is to a reasnable standard, the plot is the usual (zombies taking over the world), and the location (the shopping mall) is effective and works well. The zombies are simply terrifying due to them being able to run ! This also makes the film like no other typical zombie film apart from '28 Days later'. They also look very frightening and realistic, unlike the ones from the original (clown lookalikes with face paint on) The director, Zack Snyder has created an effective sense of isolation in the film. All the time mayhem and panic is displayed on screen, as well as the desperation of surviovrs running away.
There is also a cameo appearence from Peter (The cop in the original 'Dawn Of The Dead').It is definately worth a watch, I haven't spoken to anyone who has not at least thought it was 'ok'.
ok not a big fan of zombie films usually, find them laughable to be honest. watched the original dawn of the dead film a few years ago and found it stupid to say the least. but this film is in a different league to all those old zombie flicks, its up to date has good characters, good story and fast paced action. this movie (along with 28 Days Later) changed my mind about zombie movies and proves that they can be made well.. great movie, really loved it!
Beavis & Butthead remake the A-Team. Oh dear.

Now first of all I have not seen that many Zombie films in my time so I can't really compare this film to anything else. But what I would say is that it's easy to watch (if you don't mind vast amounts of blood!) and it's pretty good fun. It certainly never bores - the zombie action starts within the first 5-10 minutes (although it's debatable whether that's a good thing or not I suppose). And not a lot is left to the imagination - it's non-stop, in your face zombie action! I would also say that this film benefits from not having any MASSIVE stars as it makes it just a little bit more believable - and the performances were good to match.
No plot, no characterisation - what a pile of b******s this movie is. Both 28 Days Later and Shaun Of The Dead are FAR superior. Serious disappointment.
Pants, dire, boring, pointless rubbish! And im being generous!
I love The George A. Romero trilogy of the dead. I Enjoyed the Night of the living Dead Remake but I was very worried when I found out that this film was on the way. So the day came and I watched the film with a a great deal of dread. I was wrong. It is a great action zombie splatter fest. Its not going to be your Thinking Mans film but if you enjoy 28 days later and any good blood guts and gore movie you are gonna enjoy this. A good film that doesnt take its self to seriously.
There are new takes on the original, the zombies are lots quicker, there is a woman in the lead role, there is a lot more comedy elements and the special effects are a lot more slick as youd hope being made with a much bigger budget and 26 years after the original. Well worth a rent or buy! If you like check out SHAUN OF THE DEAD
Well what can I say, two things mainly. 1. George Romero aint got much too
worry about as a horror director and 2, If you've seen the trailers for
this movie then youve probably find it a let down.
Most annoyin bit of the film is when one of the main characters try's to
recue a human from another building and her fellow companions are her eyes
an ears via walkie talkie. They discover the person has turned into a
zombie but dont tell her just repeating over and over, 'get out the
building'. Cmon what happened to,'he's a zombie!'
Talkin about Zombies I think the director had an attempt at a Rob Zombie
type of movie but never met the mark. As well as styles from a multitude of
other unique directors.
All in all has some good gore effects and a good
beginning but one sad fact remains....Accomplished actor Ving Rhames will have to include this on his CV.
Finally, you can be assured about one thing....this is a HORROR! Stick with
the original people, as it has more class and probably cost less to make.
Zombie's that run? Zombie's that run!?! That's ridiculous. They should walk really slowly so that even a ninety eight year old with no legs can escape them. That's a real horror movie. If it aint broke, don't fix it. Rubbish.
Well, that's roughly what I figured when I heard about the remake. How wrong was I? This was one of the best horror movies of the year; fast paced, great soundtrack, excellent scares and one hell of a ride from start to finish.
Oh, and it's hilarious for all the right reasons to boot. What more could you want?
Put's women off babies too.
This is absolutely DREADFUL!
NOT scary, NOT amusing, Not anything worthwhile!
