Still remarkably powerful

This is a beautifully filmed and understated film which passes the test of time. The characters hold such different attitudes to everything we find in modern Western society, yet there are also deep resonances in a story about passion and possession. There are clear parallels to Arthur Miller's and other plays and films about the Salem witchcraft trials in the USA, and I also wondered whether there is a political undecurrent, given that this film was made during German occupation of much of Europe - I don't know, but the human element is strong enough to make this memorable in its own right.
