This is an involving tale about a group of motorists who become trapped in a New York tunnel under the Hudson River following a horrific pile-up. Director Rob Cohen's classy contribution to the 1990s disaster movie resurgence is less reliant on slick visual effects than most, and Sylvester Stallone displays more vulnerability than expected as the determined leader of an escape party. Yet Cohen's orchestration of the requisite action scenes (including the early, eye-popping tunnel destruction) is impressive. Although by no means a genre classic, this provides enough solid entertainment to offset its overfamiliar storyline.

A Great Old-School Disaster Movie
There's no two ways about it - if this movie had been made in the seventies, it would have been put down as a classic disaster flick. Borrowing from disaster classics such as The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno, this is full-on cliche ridden action which sweeps you off your feet and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the final frame. Yes its corny, yes the plot is unoriginal, yes you've seen it all before - but this film does it well. Its certainly one of the best in the genre and it puts Stallone back where he is supposed to be - headlining a big explosive action movie and showing how it should be done. This film is not oscar worthy and there are times when you will probably groan and scream 'what is he doing!???!!' at your television, but if you're a fan of action-adventure or 1970s disaster movies, this is a worthwhile passing of 2 hours. Its cheesy, explosive, edge-of-your-seat mayhem - 4 stars!
