  • Not a war movie - but a movie about War.

    [Highly rated reviewer]

The reviewer who said that this is not a war film is right, it is a film about those who go to war. In particular, it is about the Muslim Algerians and Moroccans who joined up to fight for Free France in WWII, believing that they were fighting for 'egalite, fraternite et paternite', yet became the subject of prejudice, bigotry and duplicity whilst sacrificing their lives.

There are some battle scenes, which are well done, if flawed (particularly in that so many seem to die immediately from a single bullet wound).

It is not to be watched if you just want an all action war film. However, if you fancy something more thoughtful, thought-provoking and, perhaps, about the contribution of some you never even knew about, it is well worth watching.

It was very moving and compelling film which although sad (as war films often are) more so because it was a true portrayal of how colonial troups were often treated,I ejoyed it. But before any one gets to comfortable about how their country treated it's allies. successive British goverments have treaded the Ghurkers equally as bad and still are, no doubt the americans have enough cause to hang their heads in shame also

  • Great story - Liberte Egalite Fraternite

An excellent film. My previous commentators have called this correctly. A brilliant and touching story. So much so the story impelled me to comment: As a moral man, all I have to say is 'Shame on the French' ... there is a debt massively unpaid here. And as a British citizen we are by no means blameless either. Enjoy the film. If it moves you like it did me. Do something ;-) I will.

If you're into exciting films then this is definitely for you, but be warned; it is heartbreaking. Bear in mind that it is also a true story.

A very moving and realistic film of WW2. With the passing of time it is often forgotten that Colonial forces supported the allied cause to gain their victory. The French government does not come out very well in this - I wonder if ours was any better to our own Colonial partners? This film highlights that the last world war did not end with the cheers and celebrations seen in old newsreals but lingered on in the mess it made of people's lives and countries.
