A moving, sensitive and balanced film
By Marianthi from London , 26 Jan 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This film tackles one of the most difficult subjects: the death penalty. A guilty man on death row who doesn't do himself any favours, an old-fashioned Christian advisor and the parents of the victimes (two teenagers). Tim Robbins treats everyone with the respect they deserve and doesn't fall into the trap of preaching. His approach is as sensitive as anyone could wish for. Both his protagonists are marvellous, understated and deeply touching. A very important film that will bring tears to your eyes. Hopefully, it should also make you think long and hard. Fantastic.- Was this review helpful to you?

(67)A moving film to make you think
By a customer , 14 Jun 2013A portrayal of a man facing the end of his life and having to take responsibility for his actions and choices. The film is sensitive to all involved as we witness the plight of the accused, and of the parents of the victims, through the eyes of Sister Helen Prejean.
A moving film with brilliant performances by Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon.- Was this review helpful to you?

crime and punishment
By lukasz84 (75 reviews) , 19 Feb 2013it takes a rare intelligence and courage to make an un-sentimental, balanced, non-expolitative film about capital punishment. for most parts, tim robbins has achieved precisely that in 'dead man walking'. this is due to dexterous, mostly restrained direction, as much as it is to the fine acting work from ms sarandon and mr penn. the film aruges both sides of the difficult argument without a decisive turn to either. the visual intelligence and integrity of the death scene is key to understanding the motive and sensibility of this work- one should watch it carefully. it is not where the answer lies, but where the question is coming from.- Was this review helpful to you?

Walking the walk but not preaching
By Platospupil (203 reviews) , 23 Jul 2011A film which pulls in all directions. Whilst the viewer is slowly sucked into the underlying story, the facing story of a bad man going to a better place takes momentum. There are angels and there are plenty of imperfect people, capable of terrible things. A film which leaves you a little lost in the fog of the terribleness of being - but there is redemption of a kind. Without being preachy the film confers closure and a form of grace.- Was this review helpful to you?
