A potentially interesting western, obviously influenced by Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy and starring TV hunk Clint Walker as a hired gun readjusting to life after 18 years in jail. After the first insane five minute montage, 'Dead or Alive' settles into quite a straight yakuza thriller, albeit a pretty violent one. There's also a few scenes which may offend, certainly don't watch it with your granny.. The film builds to a fantastic climax. You think 'Audition' had a mental finish?
If you're into asian films you've probably seen this. If you're interested in getting into them, definately give this a whirl, it's top.
This director has built a reputation for the extreme and this is no exception. A straightforward Yakuza thriller is interspersed with typically violent and depraved scenes, the sort of thing you will never see in mainstream Western cinema. As it is I feel it's weaker than both Audition and the superb Ichi The Killer but if you like Mr Miike's brand of mayhem then give it a watch. P.s. The ending is truly bizarre but somewhat explained in the film notes in the DVD.
