Director Peter Weir's lyricism may sometimes seem out of place in modern Hollywood, but there is no denying that this warm, touching tale struck a chord with audiences around the world. Robin Williams plays the unconventional teacher at a stuffy boys' school in late-1950s America, who awakens a love of poetry and writing among a disparate group of troubled adolescents headed by Robert Sean Leonard and Ethan Hawke. However, the individualism he fosters eventually leads to tragedy. The two young leads — along with Josh Charles — turn in subtle performances, and the film is lusciously photographed and genuinely moving, even if Tom Schulman's Oscar-winning screenplay does lurch occasionally into mawkish melodrama.
"...[Williams gives an] exceptionally fine performance....Some very good performances from the younger actors [as well]..."
well, after waiting a week for the dead poets society disc, it turns out some other person got it, watched it, then thankfully returned it!!!
what an effing liberty!!!!!!
so I missed my weekend film and paid for someone else to watch it.
I am not happy.
CURSE YOU ROYAL MAIL!
For a long long time this was my absolute favourite film. Over time others came along, but this will always have a special place in my affections.
The kind of film that will leave some people unmoved, whilst others cry tears of sadness and joy. It wont touch everybody, indeed I can be unaffected by these emotional rollercoasters myself at times. Dead Poets Society, however, touched me for many reasons.
Robin Williams sheds his comic talents for deeper emotions. He portrays a character of warmth and wisdom, the kind of man so full of goodness and a steadfast sense of what really matters, and I ended up wishing I knew him. Dont get me wrong, his comic timing gets regular opportunities to run free, as he does best, but its done in a way that matches the tone of the character. And in that sense the script is fabulous.
The scenery is memorably beautiful - some fantastic shots of New England autumn and winter are particularly fine.
The characters supporting Robin Williams are excellent, including a young Ethan Hawke as a shy, nervous boy who is encouraged to believe in himself and the school year progresses.
I cried and smiled at the good moments in this film, and cried and ached at the profoundly sad times. You too may well need the tissues, but I guarantee that if you are moved by this film, it will leave you uplifted, not down, in the end.
Bruce Willis' next film will see him playing a peace loving man who turns to vengeance. The Die Hard star is to appear in Morgan's Summit, written and directed by Tom Schulman. Willis, whose other films have included Terry Gilliam's Twelve Monkeys, Luc Besson's The Fifth Element and Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, will play a radio host who has made his name telling listeners' stories of kindness. However, when his life is struck by a brutal crime he finds himself torn apart by the need to... Read more
