Most helpful review
Watchable but unpleasant
By optimist from London , 16 May 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Jeremy Irons gives one of the defining performances of his career in this classic identicals story which turns out quite as disturbing as you'd expect if somebody told you that Cronenberg's made a picture about gynaecologists.
It's obviously a bad idea for a doctor to start sleeping with one of his patients but in the Mantle twins' case things become grippingly complicated when the nicer, quieter one of the two brothers - who habitually share everything, including their women - actually falls in love.
What you then watch is the gradual but spectacular disintegration of a finely tuned relationship Jeremy Irons has on screen, literally with his other half.
Intriguing, unsettling, but eminently watchable, and a master class in character nuance.- Was this review helpful to you?

(28)Among the best Cronenberg
By a customer , 22 Jan 2012This film is unequalled as a portrayal of dependence, addiction and obsession. Jeremy Iron's devastating performance as the Mantle twins overshadows his turn in the following year's Reversal of Fortune, for which he won an Oscar.
David Cronenberg, who shows unprecedented constraint with respect to gore (the film really isn't very gory at all), continues his evolution as an outstanding director of actors that started with James Woods in Videodrome, Christopher Walken in The Dead Zone and Jeff Goldblum in The Fly. Nowadays he draws the talents of contemporary A-Listers such as Keira Knightly, Michael Fassbender, Ralph Fiennes and Viggo Mortensen and I think this film shows why.
It's not an easy watch - the themes of drug addiction and gynaecology may be off-putting for some - but if you like Cronenberg's later work (A History of Violence, Eastern Promises), I recommend this movie. It's a little subtler, but just as powerful.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dated and a little dull
By a customer from Surrey , 10 Jan 2011Saw this when it first came out but it had not had the same impact second time round (do we require more sophisticated or violent entertainment these days?). It dragged and it is a bit too far up its own backside to be a great film. However, Irons performance was exhausting to watch and he was the star of the show without a doubt.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good film, poor DVD
By a customer from Eastleigh , 11 Jan 2010If David Cronenberg is your cup of tea, then you'll enjoy this. Jeremy Irons is excellent in the dual role of the identical twin gynaecologists, thanks to his performance and some clever visual tricks (before CGI was commonplace), it really seems like he's playing two different, if physically identical, characters.
However I feel I have to warn you that the DVD you'll be watching (from the Carlton Silver Collection) is pretty lacklustre compared to what DVDs can be like now (not to mention Blu-Rays). The lack of quality will be more evident if you watch it on a large LCD or Plasma, you'd probably get better quality if you watched it on a Standard Defination TV channel (but of course you'd have to wait for it to come on).
If you can ignore that, it's worth seeing if you like Cronenberg or Irons, but if you want to buy this film do not bother with this low rent DVD version, there's probably much better ones (there's also a Criterion Collection Edition), even if you have get one that's Region 1.- Was this review helpful to you?
