Moretti's Caro Diario is one of the most prominent autobiographical attempts. The film is abundant in images. Images of Rome and Italy. Nostalgic mood and brilliantly told stories. The film comprises of three parts. The first part is 'On my vespa'. What is more typical of Rome? Going around the city on a vespa scooter. The second part is called 'Islands'. A professor addicted to TV, spoiled children, noisy islands, eremites. The third part is called 'Doctors'. Doctors who know how to speak but not how to listen. I'm sure you 've been through.

I've seen this film probably more than 10 times and I enjoy it more and more every single time.

  • Pleasant but underpowered

I generally liked the quiet tone of this film and at best its gentle humour was a real pleasure - for example, in a series of scenes showing an island inhabited exclusively, it seemed, by single children and their adoring parents. The cinematography could be impressive, too, especially in a sequence on the volcano of Stromboli. Overall, though, I found it too directionless and underpowered to do much more than pass the time in a mildly pleasant way.

  • Irritating

I only rented this as I'm a fan of Nanni Moretti's other films, Quiet Chaos and The Son's Room, but this was unstructured and a bit too twee. But the most irritating thing was the subtitling. White lettering on white (or light) backgrounds do not make for an easy read. I gave up after a while.

  • The March before Aprile

    Rated - 3.0 stars

This film has to be seen in the context of Moretti’s unfurling pre-occupations and his overall mission to finally make the films that in ‘Dear Diary’ he dreams about. ‘Aprile’ sees the hilarious culmination of the Trotskyist confectioner in his 1950’s pastisseria and ‘Il caimano’ is the brilliant finale to his quest to make an adequate political commentary on Italy’s President.

Here, Nanni is very much ‘on the way’ – but I’m not sure that the journey, whilst interesting, is anything like as satisfying as his later works.

  • Rambling and a bit pointless

Nani Moretti films himself travelling around Italy in a number of fairly random anecdotes which don't really go anywhere. His observations are a bit banal. Doesn't he have anything more important to say?

  • Dull in parts

Was this a Fellini tribute? It was episodic, dull in parts, stagey and maybe I missed the point. The Aolian Islands bit was by far the best, although the last part was poignant - was it true? Not sure, it didn't matter a great deal, rather a missable movie, sadly.
