Most helpful review Death Note - Vol.1

  • The most important Anime of recent years!

From its humble beginnings in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine to successful international franchise including three live action films, a novel and the obligatory merchandising line Death Note has grabbed the public’s imagination like no other show in years. Eschewing the typical spiky haired hero with hidden powers, giant robots, big eyed, big breasted girls and the other Anime cliché’s, we are instead treated to story of deep intelligence and moral questioning, with more twists than a corkscrew and a game of mental chess that requires a board with more than sixty four squares on it. The fantasy elements concerning the titular Death Note and its owner, the shinigami Ryuk and the childlike, wide eyed, eccentric genius L seem totally congruous and believable. What stands out the most is how things move so swiftly and the story progresses through the narrative of Light’s thoughts, his conversations with Ryuk and the mental ruminations between Light and L as they plot their next moves without losing momentum or the viewer’s interest. If anything, the depth of thought and the rationale displayed by both characters as they try to outthink each other is one of the greatest strengths of the show

When a Manga makes the transition to an Anime there are sometimes changes made to a character or even some liberties taken with to the story. Thankfully this is not the case with Death Note and everything is exactly as originally intended by creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. To say the animation from Madhouse has brought the story to life would be an understatement. The voices totally suit and define the characters (but not the hideous US dub – avoid at all costs); the soundtrack is both haunting and dramatic; the artwork is stunning, and the tension is so palpable you can feel the hairs stand up on the back of your neck.

There is no question that this is an essential series for any Anime fan to have in their collection. In short, Death Note is the new benchmark in Anime.

  • Absolutely fantastic mind bending anime

When death note began production to become an anime I was worried. The manga was one of the most original, intelligent and innovative for a long time and I was worried it would become a dragged out cash cow that so many others have become.

How amazed I was when I finally saw this anime. It is so faithful to it's source material. Even the films since have had to condense the story, but the anime almost has every frame and scene.

The story is fantastic, a school age guy light, finds a journal with death note written on the front. Instructions inside read how if someone's name is written inside they will die. Discovering it's power is real the story shows how this effects light. This develops into the police, lead by a character named L, as they try to track down the person causing the killings. The battle of wits between Light and L is unlike anything you have seen before. Every single episode has twists and turns in the battle that have been so intelligently written that you just wont see it coming.

After all the build up the conclusion is fantastic. If you decide to watch this series you won't regret it, this is one of the best anime series, if not the best, ever created.

  • As good as the books and better than the films.

This anime series lives up to all expectations. Wether you're a fan of the books and/or the films or wether you're new to the series or even new to manga, Death Note is highly recommended.

Beautifully made, superbly animated, and true to the source material, this series is absolutely fantastic in every way but one; the American dubbing. The two main voices of Light and L do not suit the characters at all. L in particular doesn't sound right to me. But despite that the series is still amazing and it can always be watched in Japanese (with subtitles, if needed).

I would also point out to fans that if you watch the interview with the american actor who voiced L you will hear him compare Death Note to Spirited Away! Am I the only person that finds that a bit of a strange comparison?

  • Best Anime ever ?

    Rated - 5.0 stars

I'm not the world's biggest manga fan but have seen all the so called classics like Akira etc. but this blows them out of the water. I am 12 episodes into the series and am completely gripped by it and can't wait for the next disc to arrive. A lot of the Manga stories are a bit infantile which is what set's Death Note apart, it is quite sophisticated in dealing with the mental battle between Light and L and is thoroughly enjoyable as well.

I hope it can sustain the suspense until the the final chapter.

  • Anime at it's best

Given the gushing reviews this has got it would be easy to be disappointed with this show but it really is great. The plot is fantastic and original and the animation is much more sophisticated than the norm. If you aren't blown away with this then perhaps Anime is not for you because this is what this genre strives to be, all in one show.
