Andy Griffith (Matlock) plays an alcoholic who denies his addiction and drives his wife and two of his four kids into their own battle with substance abuse. After he suffers a heart attack, the whole family is forced to face the reality of their dysfunctional lives. Griffith, Joyce Van Patten, Season Hubley, Dana Andersen and Keanu Reeves are excellent as the self-destructive family. Sharply directed by Thomas Carter (Miami Vice), this TV movie offers a sobering portrait of a middle-class family in crisis. An important social issue drama done with style and intelligence.
'A Decade Under The Influence' is a fine film which charts the cinematic revolution that occurred in America in the 1970s.
By making reference to both obscure and familiar films & film makers AND by high-lighting the social, cultural, and political changes surrounding & supporting this revolution, 'A Decade Under the Influence' serves as a valuable lesson in film history, American history, feminist theory & social reform.
This film is truth with no sugar coating and it tackles all subjects head on. Excellent work.
The late Ted Demme (Nephew of Jonathan) was in the middle of making this documentary with Co-director Richard la Gravenese when he dropped dead of a heart attack. LaGravenese, as a tribute to his dead friend - finished the film.
It's a great documentary, certainly for fans of the book 'Easy Riders Raging Bulls'. If 70's cinema is your thing, you'll love it. There's some obvious exclusions - obviously it's a big area to cover but I would've loved an interview with Spielberg or Lucas but for their own reasons they chose not to participate.
Nevertheless, some great stories and great interviews with some 70's film icons.
