    [Highly rated reviewer]

This film plodded along at a snail's pace, even *after* I resorted to watching vast chunks of it in ffwd. It's only 100 minutes long, (not 123 as declared on the label,) but there's about enough story to fill 30 of them. The rest is just padding. Distinctively shot in Argento's inimitable (interminable) style, the movie has the air of a 1970s Soviet-Bloc TV drama. So, if you like that sort of thing, go right ahead. I, however, have better things to do.

  • I preferred this to The Bird with Crystal Plumage

My favourite Argento film to date. It revises the basic plot of Bird with Crystal Plumage, but, for me, this movie is more substantial - the characters are more sympathetic, there's more intentional humour, and the plot twists are less predictable. Stylishly shot as ever, and offering a good mix of the weird and the more conventional thriller.

  • See The Bird with the Crystal Plumage instead

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage was made 5 years before this and Argento has pretty much repeated himself with Deep Red being a more violent but far sillier copy of his earlier film. This film is for Argento fans only. Lots of blood and violent deaths, deafening music which is out of place and imaginative set-pieces taking the place of a sensible plot. Argento does have a certain style, even though much of his films are now unintentionally amusing in places. For that reason its a 3 star film for me

  • Another great from Dario Argento

LOve this film. characters, acting and most of all the story is very ethrawling ... keeping you guessing until the end. As usual uses music to build suspense and indicate the killer is near. Dario argento?1970s horror fans will enjoy!

  • Straightforwardly fine

I am beginning to appreciate the talent of Dario Argento as I get older. 'Deep Red' appears subtle alongside most of his films, and is the better for it. My main problem with his early films is the casting catastrophes that were the hallmark of European co-productions in the 60s and 70s, mostly attractive Anglo-Americans who were pretty grim actors but who might raise some box-office interest outside Italy. Here, however, Argento has somehow managed to rope in David Hemmings, who would have been famous in Italian film circles for his performance in 'Blow-up'. He brings real acting class, allowing us to see a leading man who is three-dimensional and convincing. Daria Nicolodi is a fine foil for Hemmings, and also provides a very interesting interview for the DVD extras. The film itself is more restrained than 'Suspiria' - not in itself such a bad thing! - and is very well crafted in its visual and musical aspects. As a horror it maybe will seem tame to 21st century eyes, but it works well just as a very good film indeed.

It is true that Deep Red is a bit long and drawn out - but don't let that put you off. It is classic Argento. The atmosphere is superbly crafted and the score a treat. But just look what 25 years can do to you (watch Gladiator and you'll see what I mean).
