    [Highly rated reviewer]

There were many cannibal films made in the 70's, such as Cannibal Holocaust and Ferox and Last Cannibal World. They were all made by Italian directors, all very badly dubbed into English, had vast amounts of sex and gore and all were dreadfully racist. This was one of the earliest of the genre and was par for the course except the gore content was toned down in this (heavily censored?) version.

Also the women in the tribes looked more like extras from Emmanuelle than deep river savages and had names like Maria!!!! Really really terrible movie that not even bad enough to be entertaining. Another film I would give no stars for if there was that option.

This was like watching an adult boys' own ripping yarn.

Tatally prdictable, poor attempt to titilate in parts. Still, not a complete waste of time.

    What did I expect ?

As a previous reviewer stated the extras look like rejects from a soft core movie.

There are far better Cannibal movies, dont waste your time

Deep River Savages. Doesn't that sound like a good film for all the family? I rented this mainly because the title suggests gore, sex and more gore. I had heard of this film before and was intrigued after seeing Cannibal Holocaust and Zombie Flesh Eaters (actually very good).

There's little gore in it and apart from a hand being chopped off nothing much else of interest. One truly shocking moment is when a 'savage' slices the throat of a live goat (sorry for the unintentional rhyme). Not for Smiths fans!

Overall pretty boring and plotless. Stick to Zombie Flesh Eaters and Evil Dead if you want to see a video-nasty.

  • Not uncut, and not any good

First things first. This DVD is not, as claimed, uncut - the BBFC have removed almost four minutes of footage of animal cruelty. This absence will not upset most viewers, who are likely to be repelled by this sort of material; completists and hardcore genre fans should, however, look elsewhere.

The plot concerns a photojournalist who is abducted by a 'primitive' tribe while on assignment in Thailand (and, bizarrely, whilst also on the run after an irrelevant stabbing incident). Initially mistreated by the tribesmen – he decides that they believe him to be some kind of fish(!) - he eventually proves his worth and is accepted by them, at the same time winning the heart of a local woman.

By this point, the viewer is screaming at the screen, desperate for some cannibal action – or action of any kind, for that matter. The cannibals do turn up eventually, in the form of a rival tribe. Cue some brief dismemberment and entrail eating, then it’s back to the drama of village life. Eventually it all ends. It feels like you have been watching travelogue footage for a lifetime.

Viewing Deep River Savages for anything other than its historical value – as the forerunner to a whole host of Italian flesh-munching movies - is an unrewarding business. If you really want to delve into this most shady of genres, get hold of an uncut version of the infinitely superior Cannibal Holocaust instead of this exercise in tedium.
