Deja Vu

When a ferry filled with crewmen from the USS Nimitz and their families is blown up in New Orleans, Federal Agent Doug Carlin (Washington) is brought in to help with the investigation. He becomes attached to an experimental FBI surveillance unit that uses spacefolding technology to look back a little over four days into the past. While tracking down the bomber Carlin gets an idea in his head: could they use the device to actually travel back in time and not only prevent the bombing but also the murder of a local woman whose truck was used in the atrocity?

I'm sure I've seen this before....

Only joking... If you suspend a bit of reality here and get into the film (hey if it's not a documentary you do have to give a little imagination to all films !), then this is a cracking film. Ok it is a bit far fetched in reality - what travelling into the past or future films aren't, but for pure action, a good story line that will draw you in and some reasonable twists, this is well worth a watch. Put another way, if Denzel Washington picks up a script and says yes, you are surely going to have a film that is worth a watch anyway, aren't you ?

    Should have been better

Deja Vu was a 4-star movie that lost its way in the finale.

The characters are interesting; the plot elements stretch believability just the right amount; the race to find the terrorist keeps you somewhere in the vicinity of the edge of your seat. So far, so good...

The problem starts when the script cashes in the unique plot elements and goes for a more-or-less typical ending. In the final 30 minutes the film loses all consistency with what it's established in the first 90 minutes. It's almost as if the studio switched directors midstream. This is a real shame as the film had a lot going for it.

This discontinuity didn't leave me disliking the movie - it's still a worthwhile watch. I was, however, left disappointed.

    • 23 Nov 2006

"First-class genre fun" in Deja Vu Among the cinema releases in the US this weekend is Deja Vu, an action movie starring Denzel Washington and directed by Tony Scott. The movie, which sees Washington travel back in time to try and prevent a murder, has been labelled as "first-class genre fun" by Los Angeles Times' critic Kenneth Turan. Deja Vu sees Scott and Washington team up once again, as they previously worked together in 2004's crime thriller, Man on Fire. Tony Scott -... Read more
