This is the sequal to 'The Robe'. It isn't as good as The Robe, probably because Richard Burton doesn't star in this film. But how could he? He dies in the last film! Still good though, but don't expect the gladiators fight to be as good as Spartacus or Gladiators. I did find the sound level to be a bit low, so I turned up the volume control to almost full on. Worth a look at.

  • Lots of fun, does what is says on the tin

Using sets and some B list members of the cast left over from the Robe, this sequel does exactly what it says on the tin. Great rainy Sunday afternoon material for fans of the genre. Like most 50s epics there is something charmingly ludicrous about it. You have to suspend disbelief to understand why, when Susan Hayward visits the pec central that is her husband's gladiator school, she falls for old greasy skin himself Victor Mature, over the other strapping hunks on offer.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this old classic once again, very pleasing to the eye, great camera work, and Victor Mature strutting his stuff, brilliant!!, got to recommend this to anyone, who enjoys watching good old fashion movie making at its best.

Personally, the first movie,'The Robe' is better. This sequel comes nowhere near.

If you enjoyed the Robe then this is a must see as Demetrius and the Gladiators is the sequel to the Robe.As it was made in the 1950's I thought the sound quality was pretty good and no expense was spared as a big Hollywood Box Office Epic. This is one of the Classics based on the time of Christ when Demetrius was looking after the Robe which Jesus wore and supposed to have supernatural powers.Demetrius is forced into becoming a Gladiator becoming a champion. Some good fighting techniques in the Arena, but with a crazy Emperor,Claudius who gives the power of life and death in the Arena. Can be a typical overated Hollywood film of that time when something that is from a serious past is glamourised.

Lively sequel to the Robe, that stands well on its own, very good scenery and fight scenes in the arena, remember this was pre computer special effects, less blood thirsty than 'gladiator' but this was made in 1954, a good story line with solid acting from Victor Mature, Michael Rennie, Ernest Borgnine and Jay Robinson as Caligula played with the right amount of madness, bearing in mind he made his film debut as Caligula in the Robe,if you liked Spartacus or Qua Vadis you will enjoy this.
