    [Highly rated reviewer]

A shady magazine publisher stages mock black mass rituals. A defrocked priest who is also an escapee from an asylum is on a mission to rid people of the devil within them. When he sees what he thinks is the real sacrifice of a girl, he goes after the participants.

This is a pretty decent piece of exploitation cinema from 1974. The gore content is not high, but there is plenty of naked flesh on display and the cast includes the legendary Lina Romay (of 'Female Vampire' fame).

As is often the case with foreign films such as this, the dubbed English dialogue is poor; subtitles would have been a better option.

There are many versions of this film, the original being made several years earlier as Exorcism. This one has the disembowelment missing but given the quality of Franco's special effects that is no real loss.

The splicing of different grades and colours of film stock together with the abrupt cutting is more irritating but after a while it becomes almost arty in a grindhouse sort of way.

As for the story, this tale of a defrocked priest and child molester who murders those who take part in fake black magic rituals is hardly ground breaking. For Franco fans it has the usual staged show, the aforementioned black magic. It's only mildly tedious and worth watching for their smiles at the end of the performance.

    Overall surprisingly enjoyable.

Great, loved it. its typical Jess Franco. I`ve always been a big fan of old style, gothic horror from the 60`s, 70`s.

Well worth watching, if just for the pure nostalgia.

It's absolutely terrifying (and not in a good way) that such films get made. Not because of the content - a crazy priest, bondage, murder - but because it's so poorly done. Even Lina Romay can't save it. She tries - my God she's beautiful - but Jess Franco, who casts himself as the lunatic priest, didn't clearly go to film school.
