I really like Derren Browns style. He is obviously a very gifted person who has a talent for being a great entertainer and showman.
Some of the clever things he does rely on human abilities that we all have but seldom use (like intuition), others tap into the vast power of the subconscious mind, others rely on intricate skills that he has obviously spent years mastering, while others really do make you wonder how he does it!
If you are at all interested in the subject of how the mind works then you will love this DVD as much as i did.
If you are not, then you will still find it a fascinating insight into human behaviour and mind control.
My suggestion is to rent it (and his other DVDs) as soon as possible, as I have yet to meet anyone who is not amazed by this sort of modern day magic.
Once viewed, it is sure to be the subject for many interesting conversations with family and friends.
If you have an inquisitive mind then do beware, as trying to work out how he does some tricks will keep you awake all night!
Derren Brown remains a master of his art, but this just doesn't feel up to the level of the first series.
In series 1, the standout moments for me where when he explained a small part of the trick, making us feel like he'd shared the secret, then immediately realising he'd still held back a sizeable portion of the trick. This series has no such moments, flitting from one illusion to another as he shows off.
I also felt the episodes contained too many tricks that seemed too similar. I'm all for thematic connection, but all too often, I had the feeling I'd seen him do that trick before - whether in this series or the previous one.
Undoubtedly, watching these tricks in person would be astounding and I would leap at the chance. However, when a self-confessed 'greatest conman' shows off his ability to predict people's actions on camera, I can't shake the notion that there may be some camera trickery or stooges involved, despite his claims otherwise.
Though I may well be wrong, the thoughts in my head, as well as the repetition of techniques, detracted from my enjoyment, amazement and wonderment.
