The quirky no-budget charm of El Mariachi may have gone, but director Robert Rodriguez here clearly revels in the chance to splash out with the backing of a studio to remake his modest debut feature effectively. Antonio Banderas assumes the mantle of the mysterious guitar-playing stranger who arrives south of the border seeking vengeance against an evil drugs baron, and keeps his tongue wedged firmly in cheek as he carries out his acrobatic slaughter of hordes of bad guys. Add to that a smouldering early appearance from Salma Hayek, sharp cameos from Quentin Tarantino and Steve Buscemi and a rootsy rocking soundtrack from Los Lobos, and you end up with joyfully mindless mayhem.

    It's also a chick flick

I'm a girl and I just love this film. I did watch it first in the company of a whole bunch of lads, and wasn't looking forward to it, but by the end of Steve Buscemi's story at the beginning I was hooked. I will watch it any time.

Yes, it's violent, but it's also incredibly funny. It never takes itself too seriously, and while it's slicker than El Mariachi, it plays up against those production values to great effect. How else would the full range of Campa and Quino's guitar playing skills be brought to life?

I bow to the majesty of Salma Hayek, possibly the hottest woman on the planet. I applaud the role of Quentin Tarantino's character. I adore Antonio Bandera's one-handed hairdo trick and his sense of just trying to fulfill his task - the killing is accidental. The details are great - Carolina's mismatched shoes, the tattoo of a lady, and, of course, Cheech Marin.

I'll take this over the far more styled and self-consciously cool Pulp Fiction any day, preferably with a couple of girlfriends who also love it.

    Banderas at his best

Great over-the-top acting and violence, tongue in cheek and not to be taken too seriously. I don't think that Antonio Banderas has actually made anything better than this in his career.

    GREAT FUN !

Great music, great locations, great characters, great actors, great acting, great action, great story, great direction... and did I mention the great music ! This film is just great fun, and I bet that they also had great fun making it. Provided that you don't mind a bit of violence, this one is a must.

    classic action/comedy smoothness

i'm surprised no-one has felt right about this film. I must have watched it dozens of times and i still don't get bored of it. Rodriguez is a master of his craft and this is the best he has both written and directed in my opinion.

I cannot fault this film no matter how many times I watch it. The cast is perfectly chosen with amazing appearances from Tarrantino, Cheech Marin of the Cheech and Chong films, the ever amazing and stunning Hayek and the inimitable Buscemi. The script is bizzare and far-fetched to say the least but anyone who see's this as a fault has missed the point completely. in any real terms the hero would have died in the first gun fight but this is in no way connected with reality. To sum this film up in one word there can be only one - cool. forget plausability and settle for really good fun. (oh and it was made for $4 million dollars compared to the $40 million dollar hollywood efforts that this trashed at the box office)

    Full Blooded action

Made for a male audience this movie is the thing, if you want to enjoy your new 5.1 surround etc.

If you like guns, blood and action (only in movies of course!) then go for this. Don't even bother if you plan to watch with a female.

Great action, awesome guns, ordinary plot. One of my fave teenage day’s action movie.

    Will always love it.

an OK film. a bit dated now though. film was recomended to me but i found it to have a bit too much gratuitous violence. Antonio Bandero just as gorgeous as ever!!!! worth watching just to see him!

It's big, it's daft, but Desperado is confident and hugely entertaining filmmaking.
