Tragedy King
By AyoOyebade from Beds , 05 Jun 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
Dilip Kumar was truly the tragedy king of Bollywood.
A slow film but enchanting nonetheless. A tale of two people so much in love but forced apart by society and the caste system. A tale of two souls joined together in joy and sorrow.
My heart also goes out to Vyjayanthymala who forms a kind of ménage a trois.
A beautiful tale that Bollywood has told and retold.

(9)old Devdas Vs New Devdas
By a customer from basingstoke, uk , 27 Sep 2006When we saw the new Devdas with Shahrukh, we thought we should see the old one to compare.
The new one had great graphics, color and good acting, but the story was slightly modified to make it more appealing. Overall Great
The old one was black and white, the artistery will appeal to you if you like black and white. The film does not leave as much impact as the new one, probably because of the old print etc.
Good to watch for nostalgia.- Was this review helpful to you?

Early Classic
By Hypatia from Cornwall , 05 Aug 2005I gave this a high mark, but should warn other viewers that the technical quality has definite drawbacks; for example, the English subtitles are atrocious. When anyone speaks at length about their feelings, philosophy of life etc, the translation is complete rubbish!
It's probably fair to compare this 1955 version with the 2002 one shown on Channel Four. I enjoyed both. The later one needed updating, not least because the issue of parental permission is less urgent than fifty years ago. It was also more a Bollywood musical format, with some splendid dance routines. However, the major fault was the casting of Devdas himself, the central character. Shah Khan may be a big star - but far too lightweight for the part, and in my opinion this mis-casting came close to destroying the power of the tragedy. The earlier actor, Dilip Kumar, portrayed a complex man with a dark even cruel side, despairing, emotional, self-destructive, flawed - and made this version a classic.- Was this review helpful to you?

Wonderful poetic stuff
By Loli from Nottingham, England. , 18 Jun 2005This film reminded me of my childhood sweethearts and how twisted our lives could become as we grew and changed into adults crushed into the conformity of our society. The acting was poetry with Dilip Kumar outstanding as the sodden Devdas, you could feel his words spinning round your head almost as if you were drunk too. His monologues on his lost love showed some of the best acting classical Indian film has to offer. I especially enjoyed the classical dance and songs which interwove nicely with the drama. Devdas has a simple plot but a wonderful aura and complexity of feeling keep you interested till the end.- Was this review helpful to you?
