Exhausting, amusing but ultimately rather sad documentary tracing the friendship and rivalry between two US bands - the... read more on Time Out
A jaw dropping insight into the crazy world of some particularly crazy rockers.
ilarious documentary about the rivalry between The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. I'd heard of both bands, but only heard music by the former and nothing about the latter. Exploring more the egomania of the Jonestown front singer to say that this is one of the most interesting rock documentaries I've seen is an understatement. I don't think everyone would enjoy the music, however in the opening half hour of the film, the scene is set on what the Jonestown Massacre believe in musically and it sat very well with me, both musically and artistically, to the extent that I was very interested to hear more of their music. Instead of the film being a promotion for the band it swung in a different direction as the ego of the Jonestown lead singer got worse and worse and out of control. At times it seemed contrived but when you watched the film you buy in to his ego and watch with humour and a bit of sadness at a talent that could be so much more than it is. Heartily recommended for any fans of rock and roll cliches done well.
As far as 'rockumentaries' go this is not... too bad. The plot is all over the place in a rather haphazard way but somehow it works. The cinematography is pretty cool as is the music and at times it's pretty hillarious - but MY GOD are the two self proclaimed 'Messiahs of Music' annoying. Such egos! Such self righteousness!! By the end I wanted to rip my hair out. I guess that's probably the point.
Watch it, it's an interesting, at times fascinating account of obsession, jealousy, social competition, drug abuse, pride, more drug abuse, ambition, loneliness, and oh yeah - music.... but be prepared to be annoyed by it all. Very, very annoyed.
Inspired by the release of “American Teen”, we’ve compiled own playlist of must-see twenty first century documentaries. It’s been quite a decade for non-fiction filmmakers. Once synonymous with earnest and boring, the genre has undergone a radical facelift and enjoyed the kind of box-office success that would have been beyond the wildest dreams of the old guard of fly-on-the-wall practitioners. If Michael Apted had been charting the life cycle of the documentary film... Read more
