Excellent movie. Almost as good as Pandora;s Box.

  • Brooks shines through

An average melodrama of a girls life when she is basically raped and thrown into a home and her subsequent hardships.

But the glowing presence of Louise Brooks keeps it watchable. She has a such a beautiful expressive face that she just stands head and shoulders above any contemporary actresses.

And though her hair does change to a slicked back look for a while the return of the bob brings back her vivaciousness.

  • Depressing but well done silent pic

    Rated - 4.0 stars

I've not a lot of experience in watching silent films and initially found this hard to follow. I was also frustrated by the number of times a conversation clearly takes place without the words to expain it. My failngs aside however I was soon drawn into this film, the tragic story of a wronged young woman who is sent to a work-house to reform. After this depressing and desperate start there are moments of happiness but far more moments of sadness, the story has a lot to it and it is all portrayed well enough to make it moving at all the right points and make you root for the innocent lost girl all the way.

  • Not the Classic it's claimed to be.

A reasonable film but not the classic I was led to believe so a bit disappointing. The film did cover some subject matter (rape, prostitution) that I was surprised to see screened at this point in the century.
