Most helpful review Die Another Day

  • Worst so far

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Watching this it's easy to see why Pierce Brosnan has now decided to bow out as Bond. He must have smelt how rotten the franchise was getting as this is easily the worst out of them all.

It's unexciting, unfunny and frankly dull. The CGI is woefully cheap-looking (seriously not good for a movie this expensive) and has unfortunately replaced the great stunt work which was the series' hall mark. The attempts to give it a modern feel are incredibly misplaced and cheesemongouring (terrible Madonna song, surfing etc). This is a really bad movie. The makers need to completely re-evaluate what the hell they think they're doing before they continue the series.

The very idea that they were considering giving Halle Berry her own franchise in the Jinx character just seems laughable.

Judging by this any actor worth his salt would be wise to give the iconic role a wide berth. Bond may well have had his day, especially when you compare this to something like the recent Bourne movies, and it may be an idea to let him retire him for good.

  • The Day The Dodgy Bond Films Died

The 20th Bond film and the fourth of the Pierce Brosnam series. Rehash of previous Bond films. Villain hopes to use glass / diamond studded satellite to harness light and energy from the sun. Starts well but goes downhill. Let down by very annoying stupid fencing duel between Bond and the villain, and laughable cringe making special effects, especially the expoding plane near the end, and the invisible Aston. Known for the iconic duel between the Aston and the XK8. This was thankfully the last of the dodgy Bond films before the brand was fully restored to its former majestic glory by Casino Royale and Daniel Craig.

I have to admit that I have barely watched any James Bond films, the last one (and the first) I watched was The World Is Not Enough and comparing this film to The World Is Not Enough is pretty much the same plot-line. Traitors, a girl in a bikini and Pierce Brosnan revealing a very hairy chest. But there was something about this film that was a whole lot better than The World Is Not Enough. I particularly liked the chemistry between Jinx (Halle Berry) and James. Might be due to a different director, I'm not sure.

Also, I felt that the amount of action in this film was just about the perfect amount in this film, in the The World Is Not Enough, I felt that almost every 2 minutes there was at least a fist fight. Here, I felt it was a perfect balance.

What I didn't really enjoy about Die Another Day (or in general to James Bond films) was that when they describe the reason why all this action is happening and why they are sending in James Bond, I got pretty confused. I wasn't familiar with the characters just yet to know which one is who. Lastly... I did feel that Graves (Toby Stephens) and Zao (Rick Yune) had a bit of a weird chemistry between each other...

All in all, if I had to recommend any James Bond film (so far) it would be this film.

  • Brosnan goes out on a sour note

    Rated - 1.0 star

Bond on mission in North Korea, kills General’s son, gets captured & tortured, grows a beard, released, goes after British Billionaire, nonsense.

Final Pierce Brosnan turn as 007 and despite quite a decent start it soon turns into absolute nonsense.

They obviously tried to make it even more realistic and grittier which works for the first twenty minutes but as soon as Halle Berry turns up, things go back to the usual dull, misogynistic farce.

And speaking of Halle Berry, surely the worst Bond girl ever to grace the screen? Her acting is shocking and it’s basically “let’s see how many times we can shoot her in a bikini”. Unfortunately Rosamund Pike isn’t much better especially later in the film.

There are still quite a few good stunts here and there but the CGI used is terrible and even Roger Moore’s blue screen in the 1970’s looked more convincing!

Music isn’t bad as David Arnold has given it another revamp but the theme by Madonna is awful.

The people that slag off Bond fims must have a very boring life. This one is as gripping as most and stretches the imagination. Great escapism. I suppose not all people are elderly children like me.
