For an action movie to stand the test of time it has to have something watchable in it, and after enjoying 1,2 and 3 in quick sucession before viewing this, we were not dissapointed with the previous encounters, or ineed this one.
Bang up to date, our one man army McClane is in the thick of it once again by being in the wrong (or right) place at the wrong (or right) time.
Its an all action gamble of a movie that takes all the right turns and does everything you would want it to. The whole collection of these are deserved cinema hits, and this is no exception, a must watch for any action fans, in fact any fans of the big screen.
Die Hard 4.0 is as stark an example of modern Hollywood as you're going to find.
The special effects are impressive. The unrelenting action sequences are well put together. The cast delivers, with precision, the one-dimensional performances required.
If that's all you're after, then update your list now.
But the film left me cold. At no point did anyone or anything in this movie ring true. The violence is cartoon violence (almost literally, with so much of it rendered in CGI) and the action feels like the A-Team with a budget.
The original Die Hard was a great movie because the story had depth, and the humanity of the characters was sustained at a credible level. When John McCain ran barefoot across the shattered glass, we could relate. In 4.0, as he slides around on the wing of a jet fighter in mid-air, we know we're watching a different kind of film. In fact, the I-gotta-save-my-daughter storyline, plus the aerial stunts, makes this feel much more like True Lies 2.0 than a reworking of the earlier film.
It's worth a look. But no more than that.
