Although very well sung, especially by Ben Heppner, the production was a traditional one in that the scenery was heavy and the acting pedestrian.
This is a long opera so can be a strain in the theatre. But I watched each act on a different night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was good to have an Eva, in Karita Mattila, who looked the part, and I found James Morris as Sachs outstanding. I liked the first scene of Act 3 the best with some very moving moments, not least the final quintet. It doesn't yet grab me as much as the Ring but I can understand why many consider this Wagner's best opera.
