Cheaply-made, sensational suspense thriller, filmed during a transitional period that took British director Pete Walker from skin flicks to cult horror films. The plot involves a variety of shady characters trying to force dancer Marianne (Susan George) to reveal the number of a Swiss bank account. Although crudely done by today's standards, some sequences, notably the one in which Marianne's husband (Barry Evans) gradually realises two policemen are bogus, have a certain noteworthy flair. The film was shot in and around Walker's holiday retreat in the Algarve, which adds to the appeal.
Susan George plays the titular Marianne, a young woman who holds the combination number to her late mothers bank account, the contents of which are sought after by her father and half-sister. However, Marianne isnt forthcoming with the information so they plan to get it any way they can After making a series of rather woeful British sex comedies, Walker entered into the horror genre with this title. Whilst not as gory or sleazy as his later works, Die Screaming Marianne! is an accessible film nonetheless with a solid script and sound performances (George is her usual seductive pouting self). Where the film stumbles however is with its uneven pacing, weak plot and lack of any significant suspense or action. Print quality is also rather poor in places. Overall a pretty average film but may prove of interest to those seeking an introduction point to this controversial director. 2.5/5.
