This is possibly the best opera in the ring cycle and this is a wonderful performance. James Morris is outstanding as Wotan and the rest of the cast are extremely good. One might feel that Siegmund and Sieglinde are rather large for young lovers in the first act but they act well and sing magnificently. I enjoy the production, as I have the rest of this cycle from the Met. The last act is extremely moving. It doesn't get better than this. If you are new to, or unsure about Wagner give it time to get the hang of the music, once you have I'm sure you'll be hooked.
This is the best opera from this particular Met Ring Cycle. A cast that could not be bettered had been assembled, and all give committed performances.
I especially liked Gary Lakes as Siegmund. OK, he is a big man and does not move easily, but he produced a glorious powerful tone, his final high A at the end of the first act was exceptional. James Morris and Jesse Norman both matched Lakes with power and stamina.
With good production values, a great DVD transfer this is a nice alternative to the 1980's Bayreuth Ring also available on DVD. Recommended.
