Not to be confused with the 1992 Jackie Shroff vehicle of the same name, this is a rousing blend of romantic drama and period adventure that enables co-directors CL Rawal and PL Santoshi to serve up an impressive spectacle. The legendary Raj Kapoor cuts a suitable dash as the hero bent on winning his beloved Jameela (Nutan). It was certainly something of a change of pace for the talented Nutan, who starred in the acclaimed social drama Bandini the same year, but she plays the pursued heroine with typical Bollywood ?lan.

    Saved by the storyline.

I really feel this film could have been amazing if the dance routines, wardrobe and music matched the quality of the storyline. Unfortunately they were so out of date for 1997, took up most of the film and just in case you had not had enough of viewing them in their rehearsals, you had to watch it all over again in their end show. So I was surprised it won so many awards. However the story line is delivered with meaning by all the actors and has some important messages and … just…saves the day!
