Has its moments

High school graduates in Baltimore 1959 (though it could be anywhere) with 50s soundtrack.
With Mickey Rourke making a five-star comeback in The Wrestler, fortuitously this film leapfrogged up my DVD rental list. Mickey certainly looks beautiful in this film, but in a 'he's fit and he knows it' sort of way. And his Damon Runyon style of patter I found a bit much because (Jack Lemon impersonation) 'Nobody talks like that!
Not bad stuff but not as much fun as American Graffiti, and I found the dialogue a little hard to hear, think that's the flatshare's plasma/DVD combo. The dialogue is a bit stylised and it's not too realistic, in particular the scenes in which a footie fan is setting up a test for his fiance, if she loses the wedding's off. No one, not even the adults, say, mate you're a clot. It's sort of meant to be funny, then again maybe things were a bit like that back then.
Probably best to find yourself watching it at 11pm not expecting too much, then it's all a bonus. I didn't relate to too many of the guys, it's mainly about high-school graduates finding themselves pressurised into getting married.- Was this review helpful to you?

(6)It's great to see Mickey Rourke's face pre-plastic surgery, bad living & the boxing!
By twosoddingcats (212 reviews) from Kingston-upon-Thames , 01 Jan 2012I can't believe this film will be 30 years old in 2012! The cast is a who's who of 80s actors: Steve Guttenberg, Daniel Stern, Mickey Rourke, Kevin Bacon, Ellen Barkin and it's great to see Mickey Rourke with his youthful good looks before boxing and then plastic surgery and bad living too their toll. Ultimately this is about a group of men coming to terms with impending adulthood after college and the doubts they have regarding marriage. Rourke shines as a gambler and Bacon gives an impressive performance as the black sheep of his wealthy family (college drop out, living off his trust fund)......but also noteworthy is Barkin's performance as a woman lost in her marriage...her loss of identity and her internal pain and confusion...her husband tries to 'control' his feelings via his method of storing his record collection....his only link to his single previous life. Director Barry Levinson captures the era perfectly.- Was this review helpful to you?

Rose tinted
By a customer from London , 10 Nov 2009If you were able to answer all the questions on university challenge and lived with your mum until your mid twenties - If women are unfathomable to you and thus deserved to be treated with contempt then this is the film for you.
If on the other hand people speaking ad nauseum in totally unconvincing dialogue leaves you cold then avoid this self indulgent re writing of a dull average early adulthood .
The script is unforgivable and a total waste of a fantastic stellar cast. What should have been a family home movie has been subjected on us and yet weirdly received great reviews at the time. To be honest it is visually cohesive with a nicely realised period feel but ultimately one to stay clear of .- Was this review helpful to you?

Mediocre
By stucoy (3 reviews) from Cambridge , 14 Aug 2008This film is a mildly diverting, fairly superficial piece of Americana.- Was this review helpful to you?
