This is a sublime slice of New York life from director Bob Giraldi, a veteran of over 2,500 commercials and many famous videos — including Michael Jackson's Beat It — but only two other feature films. Giraldi displays a mastery of texture and character in this delightful comedy drama set in a fashionable Manhattan restaurant. Danny Aiello exudes understated charm as the prosperous owner, who's dismayed that his family trattoria is forgoing traditional food for the flashy nouvelle cuisine that is the trademark of his talented chef son (star-in-the-making, Edoardo Ballerini). We join Aiello for one fraught night, during which he and his staff must deal with mobsters wanting a piece of the action, a demanding food critic (played by an irresistible Sandra Bernhard), a lengthy power cut and various other diversions. Filmed in Giraldi's own restaurant, this finely polished gem boasts impeccable ensemble acting, complemented by slick camerawork which gives us the best seat in the house and a plot hiding a few secret ingredients.
Enjoyable movie which uses food as an indicator of changing tastes and moral values, though everyone here gets their just desserts.
Cumulatively enjoyable, this restuarant-set entertainment blends mobster thriller, ensemble chamber piece and subtly... read more on Time Out
One of the most overlooked and underrated films of all time includes perhaps THE MOST SATISFYING ENDING to any movie I've watched (with the exception of The Prestige and The Usual Suspects).
Firstly, let me start of with a word of caution: once you have watched this movie, you may find yourself looking for the nearest Italian restaurant, because one thing this movie will do is give you a hankering for some Italian food.
The Movie itself is entertaining, with some excellent performances from the key actors and actress. The story is nothing new; a bit of mafia, family tension; life struggles and romance triangles thrown together with a pretty good flowing script.
The camera spends just as munch time on shots of food preparation in the kitchen as it does on the characters themselves, hence the possibly of a rumbling stomach looking for some linguini.
Overall, an enjoyable movie for a winter evening in front of the TV.
A deliciously captivating drama based on the events unfolding over one night in a hip Italian restaurant in New York. There are wonderful performances from a cast of relatively unknown actors. The directing is stylish and fast paced as you follow the story lines of several central characters in the restaurant. It will make you run to the kitchen for a bowl of pasta when it's finished! If you want a realistic, chic drama with a twist of classic Italian-American gangster, then rent this film!!

This is a stylish mobster film; great acting, cinematography and sound track. Unusual perceptive and a nice little twist at the end. This film is worth watching.

What a film, it is a hidden gem, great photography, great story with a gem of an ending. Seriously, rent this movie out. Now!
a great wee film that is simply but beautifully crafted and directed. no actor is out of place and although this is more of a an obervational and character film, the through line story is as classy as a subtle goodfellas and the ending is spot on. great

Great New York setting for a rush and busy Italian eatery. This movie is just as good as when it was shown on the big screen. Nice mafia plot to go with it. Well worth a slot in anyone's collection...
Apart from Lee Evans unsurprising but no less brilliant central performance, this is an absorbing, provocative and entertaining film. The suspense stops just this terrific side of silly over-the-top 1984 paranoia...and thus brilliantly evkes the "hero's" agony. Enjoy!
excellent story and superb acting with quite a twist
I would dearly love to say I loved this little flick to bitsand in a sense I was hoping I wouldbut it didn'tt really push the relevant buttons as far as absorbing plot lines go. Louis Cropa (Danny Aiello) is the owner of a critically acclaimed and fashionable New York restaurant. His son, Udo, is the head-chef whose name is on the tip of everyones tongue and the reason the place has a three-month long waiting list. Enter the mob-men, who are fully aware of the kind of money being generated and find it discourteous they are being left out of the loop... Ever since seeing Aiello in the criminally-underrated Jacobs Ladder, I've often wondered why hes never been elevated to more than a bit-part player in his roles and with this star-billing it appeared he had cast that particular shadow behind him ...but even his screen-time here isn't anything worth writing home about.
