With DINOSAUR, Disney breaks a new stride in the technological revolution of computer animation--combining computer-animated characters with digitally enhanced live-action landscapes. The effect is literally unbelievable and the clarity, realness, and definition of the pictures easily make the once surprising effects of virtual reality seem like the dark ages.
A dinosaur egg is stolen from its nest and passed along by various birds, animals and other predators each hoping to eat it. Fumbled into a community of kind and nurturing lemurs, it cracks open and Aladar, a baby dinosaur emerges. He lives happily and peacefully among the lemurs, who raise him into adolescence. However, when a natural disaster occurs, wiping out the beautiful rainforest that was their home, teenage Aladar joins a dinosaur pilgrimage--and discovers his true ancestry--in order to bring his lemur family to safety. Far sweeter and much more realistic than recent dinosaur movies like JURASSIC PARK or even classics like THE LAND BEFORE TIME, these new digital dinosaurs are surprisingly human with emotional eyes and expressive voices that make the magic nearly tangible.

Disney's most ambitious movie to date (48 animators spent more than three million hours making 70,000 CD-Roms of information that make up the computer-generated animation) is also a return to form after a run of less-than-vintage animated features (Hercules, Tarzan). While the story isn't exactly Kafka — abandoned baby dinosaur is raised by lemurs until they have to flee during a fiery meteor storm and join other dinosaurs on a treacherous trek to a new land — the animation and characterisations are superb, especially the extraordinary details of the prehistoric creatures' skin and fur. DB Sweeney and Julianna Margulies give life to their characters — the orphaned Aladar and Neera, the dino-babe he meets in his adventures — and there is great vocal support from a cast that includes Ossie Davis, Alfre Woodard and — best of all, as two ageing and crabby old critters — Della Reese and Joan Plowright.
"...Effective and frequently spectacular....A skillful blend of old-fashioned Disney storytelling and newfangled computer animation..."
I'm of that particular British mould that says Disney is a cynical, right-wing, bible-belt American conspiracy machine in a league with Microsoft, McDonalds and Walmart; intent on spreading the American way across the diversity and charm of the rest of the world. But... I loved this film. Incredible animation, good characterisation, moral not shoved too far down your throat. The kids couldn't get enough of it, so now we have our own copy. Oh well... the exception that proves the rule...!
For some reason they split these and sent me the movie in November and the bonus disc in December.
The movie was brilliant but the bonus disc should have come with the movie not seperate.
