Saturday Night Live has proved to be a valuable creative pool for Hollywood, even if for every Wayne's World and Blues Brothers there's been a Coneheads or a Night at the Roxbury. On first glance, this vehicle for Norm MacDonald falls into the latter category. It is a lot smarter than that, however, and, despite losing its nerve by the end, it is for the most part a crudely nasty treat. MacDonald and Artie Lange play a couple of losers who discover their vocation in life: being paid to play humiliating pranks on behalf of wronged victims. SNL luminary Chevy Chase pops up as a cheerfully amoral surgeon, and there's a nicely grumpy turn from Jack Warden as MacDonald's dad.
Without spoiling the plot, this was an amusing enough story of two under achievers who start up a revenge for hire business. The laughs are on the understated side, but they are there, which is more than I can say for some big budget comedies. Norm MacDonald was cast perfectly as the lead and there is a very funny cameo from Chevy Chase, who plays a gambling addicted Doctor.
So long as you don't go in to this film expecting an Academy Award level production then you'll get a lot out of it.
