This is a quite brilliant fim of an equally extraordinary novel. The multiple themes of male female power, aging men, racial empowerment, changing cultures and more are pefectly realised and always confronted straight on. There are no simple solutions, there are no Hollywood denouements but this film deals with numerous modern themes that are not all specifically South African but are exactly located there. From Cape Town to the beautiful landscapes of the western cape, each scene has a place. John Malkovich's brooding power is surprisingly good in Lurie's role, and Jessica Haines is a revelation. If that sounds less than entertaining, then believe me it will grip you utterly.
