Stalin would have hated this even more!
By Appleford (14 reviews) , 02 Mar 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
The performances of both singers and orchestra here are brilliant, bringing all the power and tragedy of Shostakovitch's opera to life with devastating effect.
The representation and acting of the cast fully meet the demands of the director and require bravery as well as skill to interpret brutal and sexually explicit scenes.
My 4-star rating reflects my slight misgivings about the set design which doesn't live up to the rest of the performance and occasionally makes nonsense of the words being sung.
As a film of a staged performance this DVD is well produced, though I'm not sure it would be the choice for repeated viewings.
One thing it confirms is that this opera is truly one of Shostakovitch's absolute masterpieces and not 'muddle instead of music', as Stalin opined when he had it banned.- Was this review helpful to you?
