    Never mind the unions

This film can be interpreted in one of two ways: it's either a piece of entertainment or it's a historical record. It doesn't make it's mind up and it suffers as a result.

As a piece of entertainment, it merits three stars imho. The characters are too loaded with symbolism and this stops them from becoming real. Watching the featurette you see how one family is supposed to represent the sufferings of the 500 unfairly sacked workers. That's a big burden.

As a historical document, it gets four stars from me. It highlights the true meaning of casualisation in the workplace and it reminds us that there was once a time when words such as solidarity, workers' rights etc meant a great deal more than they do today. It also gets across the point that they are not words that belong to prehistory.
