  • Speaking from experience

In the days of a television industry which, in my opinion, fails to appreciate new writers, this was a unique project. Looked after by Jimmy McGovern and Irvine Welsh, dock workers themselves were able to write about their personal experiences and get the result to the screen.

And a very good result it is too. Not nearly as emotional as I thought it would be, this is one of those dramas which made me feel angry rather than sad. And so it should.

Very good performances and a spot of typical McGovern humour make this a very good watch.

  • Powerful and moving scouse drama

I rented Dockers after reading Ricky Tomlinson's autobiography, and it is a superb piece of drama from the creator of Cracker and The Lakes.

Ken Stott is fantastic as the Docker who loses his job and nearly his entire family in Liverpool in 1995, and Ricky Tomlinson is great in a powerful supporting role as his mate who crosses the picket line.

Very moving in parts, see this film if you fancy some serious entertainment and even a few laughs. For a Brit Flick, it really packs a punch. Great stuff.

  • Never mind the unions

This film can be interpreted in one of two ways: it's either a piece of entertainment or it's a historical record. It doesn't make it's mind up and it suffers as a result.

As a piece of entertainment, it merits three stars imho. The characters are too loaded with symbolism and this stops them from becoming real. Watching the featurette you see how one family is supposed to represent the sufferings of the 500 unfairly sacked workers. That's a big burden.

As a historical document, it gets four stars from me. It highlights the true meaning of casualisation in the workplace and it reminds us that there was once a time when words such as solidarity, workers' rights etc meant a great deal more than they do today. It also gets across the point that they are not words that belong to prehistory.

Word for Word!!!! This must be watched to remind us of the politics at that time. As a young scot who's parents were Union Supporters, I also remember these times of Thatcher's iron hand. Even as a wee yin. For me it was the POLL TAX, and the Miner's Strike and that long cold Christmas :o( .... more like a documentary at times and characters are not as close to you as in Billy Elliott ot Brassed Off, but an absoloute must see ... Ricky as alway's does give a fine performance ....

Put it on your selection NOW.
