Gentle family comedy
By a customer from Cardiff, Wales , 23 Dec 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
'Doctor at Sea' was the second of Producer Betty Box's highly successful 'Doctor' series of comedies, based on Richard Gordon's book of the same name, which he helped to adapt for the screen. Recently-qualified Dr Simon Sparrow (Dirk Bogarde) runs away from the would-be amorous Wendy (Joan Sims) and joins a tramp steamer as ship's doctor. Simon finds that life on an ocean wave is occasionally hilarious, generally unpredictable, and not the least of its challenges is the gruff captain (played by James Robertson Justice in fine form). The voyage back is enlivened by the presence of two passengers: the owner's vivacious daughter (Brenda de Banzie) who is on the lookout for a husband and falls for the captain; and her young French friend (Brigitte Bardot) -- who of course captures our hero's heart. This is gentle, easy-going comedy, providing a relaxing evening's viewing for the whole family.- Was this review helpful to you?

(6)Just boring
By a customer , 04 Aug 2012I can't understand some of the goods reviews from some people. I agree with the critic's review. This film is just boring, I didn't laugh once. I played at double speed. basically I rented it because B. B. was there but does not sufficient to watch this. You can see her in other movies.- Was this review helpful to you?

Gentle Humour
By a customer from Whitby , 30 Nov 2008Maybe not as good as the original 'Doctor' but nonetheless an entertaining romp through faux pas and double-entendres, with many of the period's best comedy actors/actresses enjoying themselves. Undemanding viewing.- Was this review helpful to you?

brilliant
By adele spencer from shropshire , england , 28 Oct 2006doctor at sea is wildly entertaining and the humour is risque. My eldest teenager cant wait to see the others in the series and is eager to watch them.. So something made 50 years ago is still good today and enjoyed by the next generation.- Was this review helpful to you?
