Two classic versions of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic thriller where Dr. Jekyll, a scientist with dreams of transforming the world, develops and drinks a potion that separates the good and evil aspects of man. But his experiment goes awry, and he metamorphoses into the twisted and sadistic Mr. Hyde, a creature possessed of only the basest human qualities. Hyde wanders the darkest streets of foggy London, turning the city into a nightmare as he preys on those he encounters.

" [The 1931 version is] ...stunningly shot, a visual tour de force, both superb and slyly subversive..."
I was expecting the classic 1931/32 version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, but this double-sided DVD contains the 1941/42 Spencer Tracy version as well. If you like the Robert Louis Stevenson story and enjoy old films containing real (over)acting, I highly recommend this DVD for a lot of fun.
For me the shadows and mist of black and white movies create greater suspense and mystery. When I ordered this movie, I wondered if my 13 year-old granddaughter would be as impressed? Initially she groaned at the prospect of watching such an old monochrome movie. To my delight, she enjoyed the dark tale of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, praising the artistry transforming the principal actor between good and evil, the overly dramatic gestures, the period costumes and misty settings. I had long forgotten where I had heard See me dance the polka, but now I remember. These movies made an indelible impression on me. If exposed to younger generations, they may well do the same to them.
