    Terrible

After renting many Doctor Who DVD's and enjoying them all immensely I was surprised by how much of a stinker this one was; especially as it features my favourite Doctor.

There *seems* to be very little story because of the amount of sequences where The Doctor and Romana (mk II) are simply running around Paris from one scene to the next, dodging the mad French drivers and the bemused passers by.

I accept the poor sets (an entire stone wall wobbles when hit by the detectives shoulder) and the terrible monster costume as part of Doctor Who folklore, but the terrible acting (particularly by the detective) and some of the bizarre circumstances (Romana and the detective sat in a cafe drinking with the cafe owner not minding that they smashed the window to get in before it was open) are unforgivable.

I really like Doctor Who and I'm trying to be objective but I just can't think of anything nice to add. Sorry.

    Can Noir be light?

Had this not been a Dr Who story, then it might have been much better.

Watching this as an adult, I fail to recall it from my childhood, which I initially thought was odd considering it was part of Tom Baker's reign - a period that I followed avidly.

As the story progressed, however, I realised that an Arthouse-style Noir-esque story is not a memorable one for a child just breaking his teens!

Everything works, there is some superb camera-work and some very amusing Noir moments ...

... but the camera-work get's too 'Arty' for the subject, and dwells too often on long walks around Paris that show off the scenery without progressing the story,

... the Noir has none of the grainy, dark filming that makes Noir work,

... and the individual elements just don't hang together.

All-in-all, the direction is what breaks this story - had it been filmed in the 'traditional' Dr Who style, the story would have been up to the usual standard, alternatively if the story had been tailored to the filing style(s) it would likewise have worked. Unfortunately, neither of these things are true, which results in a story that you watch for completion rather than enjoyment.
