'Classic' is a much abused word
By Spectatorsoflife (6 reviews) from Hove , 10 Dec 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
Everyone is familiar with the budgetary limitations and tight production schedules which reined in the imaginations and compromised the output of all involved in the Dr Who stories of the 60s, 70s and 80s. These constraints are very much in evidence in this outing. What is less frequently acknowledged are the excruciatingly am-dram performances of the cast. Anyone who's seen William Hartnell's acting in 'Brighton Rock' can attest to his on-screen presence. What, then can account for his dismal showing here? Hell, even 'Carry on Sergeant' displayed more conviction than this. A truly wretched experience, which makes even David Tennant's self-satisfied gurning seem bearable by comparison. One to avoid.- Was this review helpful to you?

(4)give it a chance
By bluetit (4 reviews) from Shildon , 11 May 2011this was a good story in the tradition of the who. the effects arnt up to much but as im constantly reminding people at the time there were few computer graphix around to play with all they could muster was a soap box and a sheet of plastic. so i think it was good for the time it was made.- Was this review helpful to you?

As reliable as ever... but dated
By a customer from Yorkshire , 05 Oct 2010Rather like a creaking gate that needs oiling, this story has been lovingly restored by those master cratfsmen at the Restoration team, yet still shows its age. Not surprising, given that this story was broadcast over 35 years ago. Whatever you say about the shallowness (in places) of the new series, and the over-reliance on special effects, I don't think anyone would wish a return to the shoddy camerawork and cut-price scenery that blights these early shows. A special features section has an interview with the designer. Given the amount of money he had to work with, he did wonders! I don't think anyone now would recognise a recorded production where the actors slip and slide over every line and 'um' and 'er' to an uncomfortable conclusion! This would have been cut in the final edit. Yet the story itself stands tall, and could be re-told today without much tweaking.- Was this review helpful to you?

A great story!
By RickCB (12 reviews) from Pevensey , 13 Mar 2010Keys of Marinus is a startlingly original story from the early years of Doctor Who. Travelling from location to location all over the Planet Marinus, the Doctor and his companions and thrust into one danger after another. You can really appreciate the growing bond between the Doctor, his granddaughter and their two initially reluctant travelling companions.- Was this review helpful to you?
