Standard WhoBy a customer from Stirling, Scotland , 14 Jun 2007
[Highly rated reviewer]Robot, the story which saw Tom Baker begin his seven long years as the Doctor, is unfortunately quite an average affair. This is not to say it's bad, but it's not that good either...
Made by the outgoing production team before the show was given something of a re-birth by incoming producer Philip Hinchcliffe and script editor Robert Holmes, this still feels very much like a Jon Pertwee story- even more so as UNIT are on hand to help the Doctor throughout. Thus the inclusion of Tom Baker in the mix gives the whole thing a rather strange feel. Tom has yet to find his feet in the role, and it is interesting watching his performance here because much of it feels very forced in comparison to what comes later. This really is bog-standard Dr Who, complete with ropey effects and questionable acting. However, bearing in mind this story was made in 1974, and not being silly enough to compare it to anything produced today, it is perfectly enjoyable enough.
But it is decidely average (fact: most Dr Who was, and only a handful of stories in a 26 year period stand out as all-time classics), and not even us die hard Dr Who fans rate it as particularly good. This is not Genesis of the Daleks or The Caves of Androzani by any means. As such, I can't see this title on DVD appealing to anybody but those with more than a passing interest.
Which is something of a shame as the story itself has been lovingly remastered for this DVD release, and all four epiodes have fascinating production subtitles as well as auido commentaries. There is also a nice documentray on the making of the story under the extras section.
I hope I'm proved wrong, but I really can't see the kids of today watching this and getting hooked.

Dr. Who - Robot - My ReviewBy DaddyTank (228 reviews) from Ulan Bator , 09 Nov 2011I dont understand why everyone's so down on this episode. Its brilliant from start to finish. The robot's ludicrous, the fight scenes are awful and the special effects are amazing(ly bad). Everything as it should be then. There are a couple of mopments in this that made me cry with laughter....witness the arrival of the tank and the spectacle of the robot when he goes massive. The BBC ... no Britain at its finest.
Worth it for the first documentary aloneBy abingdonfilmlover (88 reviews) from Abingdon , 08 Oct 2011I won't give it away, but the story of Tom Baker becoming Doctor is worth the rental itself. Should give hope to us all
Average adventure but great performanceBy a customer from London , 04 Jul 2008The story is only average and not among the classic Whos. Nevertheless, Tom Baker hits the ground running and stamps his mark on the role of the Doctor from the outset.
Customer ReviewBy a customer from UK , 23 Jun 2008The one with the Robot. I was too small to remember the program, but had the Robot as a toy up to my early teens. And what a Robot. Fantastic design, impressive, scary, imposing and practical... on BBC children's TV budgets. Did anyone win an award for that?
The acting between the Robot and Elisabeth Sladen... we've seen little better. Just great stuff, mixed with the Nazi scientists and the whole King Kong thing makes this a wonderful story.
It does have its problem The first episode falls into silly Douglas Adams type stupidness... the skipping? Whose idea was that? And the costume changing?
Also the Robot when it grows is not convincing, and the rag doll Sarah and toy tank are terrible.
But it was all about Tom. And indeed Tom was great, dramatic, odd and funny. This was to most (Myself included) a golden age of Who. Indeed in this fans humble opinion, only David Tennant can touch Tom Baker.
average but stil worth a watchBy buzty25 (6 reviews) from Wrexham , 19 Jun 2008This is Tom Baker, in my opinion th best doctor, in his first story. Not a classic story line and the robot isnt as sinister and as exciting as th daleks or cybermen for example. It isnt one tht wil stand out but stil gud fun n wel worth a watch.
