Yes the effects are as ropey as ever and the quality is classic 1970s BBC. But if you like Doctor Who then you will like this as it has all the traditional ingredients that you remember from childhood. Shaky sets and rubber suited monsters, Jon Pertwee, the Master and UNIT all conspire to allow you to suspend your sense of belief and enjoy an hour and a half of pure escapism. Of course is silly, but it?s the good kind silly that we all enjoyed being scared by when we where younger.
The Doctor struggling with officialdom, aliens that aren't what they seem, science gobbledygook, numerous 'held as prisoner' scenes, and the Master marvellously crafty as always. There's nothing outstanding or innovative here, but it's good enough fare for the fans and with some good scenes around Dungeness. Watch out for the amazing unexpected snow and fog that affected the location filming, (and its hastily written explanation line in the script), and a rather lovely tramp-cameo in episode one - I could have done with more of him, and less of the CIA man. The extras are pretty good, especially the extended/deleted scenes.
