Vol.3: THE RISE OF THE CYBERMEN and THE AGE OF STEEL
The Doctor, Rose and Mickey unexpectedly find themselves in London on a parallel Earth. Brilliant millionaire scientist John Lumic is dying but plans to live forever. He has invented an ultra-durable steel and is secretly manufacturing casings to 'upgrade' himself and all humans into Cybermen. The Doctor and Rose gatecrash a party as she wants to see the hosts Pete and Jackie Tyler, although they're not her real parents. But they're not the only gatecrashers... Guest star: Roger Lloyd-Pack
New-look Cybermen. Shame they no longer let out the little electronic moan when they die - it was a good sound effect. However, they're BACK, somehow more frightening. And there's LOTS of them - you can't escape! Gone are the budget-strapped days when you'd be lucky to see 6 in one frame.
This two-part story sets up for the later ARMY OF GHOSTS / DOOMSDAY.
Vol.3: THE IDIOT'S LANTERN
In 1953, the hungry plasmic lifeform called the Wire plans to feast on everyone watching tv to see the Coronation of Elizabeth II. The Doctor's attempt to thwart the dastardly plot leads to a dramatic duel atop the Alexandra Palace transmitter mast. Guest star: Maureen Lipman
I found the story's premise implausible, which drags my rating down for the whole 3-episode disc.
