Alongside the woeful 'Fear Her' from series 2, this was the worst episode since Doctor Who was revived. Catherine Tate's pairing with David Tennant was horribly mis-judged, but then anybody who had seen her 'comedy' show should have already worked that out. Sarah Parrish as the spider queen is pure pantomime in every respect, and the plot resolution is increasingly typical of Russell T Davies' style that internal story logic doesn't matter as long as you've got a big flashy effect to finish off with. Cringe-worthy dialogue abounds and not even the occasionally striking direction from Euros Lyn rescues the production from being a complete and utter disaster. All in my humble opinion, of course.

  • Sarah Parrish & Catherine Tate rock!

No one ever mentions the brilliant Sarah Parrish, who plays the Empress of Racnoss! And although Catherine Tate's performance has drawn mixed reviews, I like the whole Donna Noble arc of a woman who clearly doesn't value herself and covers the gap with lots of vapid chatter, but through her association with the Doctor, finds for a while a stronger & better self.

I cant stand Catherine Tate but she's quite good in this. Not a great special but they try too hard for them I think.

This is a brilliant Doctor Who episode. The storyline is good and David Tennant and Catherine Tate work great together. Its the episode where the best doctor and the best companion meet, what more could you ask for? If you love Doctor Who (or even if you don't) this is a must see.

  • Poor Special - Bovvered? Am I?

There is no doubt in my mind that David Tennant is the best Dr Who is my lifetime (started by Sylvestor McCoy). Catherine Tate however is the worst sidekick, her angry shouty attitude from her poor comedy show is omnipresent. She almost ruins the whole episode were it not for the brilliant Dr - who shows his feelings for the lost Rose on several occasions.

The actual episode is a bit lacklustre. The main evil persona is a good but the backstory behind the motivation is a bit questionable - you'll understand when you see it. That coupled with the fact I don't think she could move made her a bit unthreatening and more a camp drag act, which might be in keeping with the seasonal special but not what I expect from Dr Who.

General feeling is a one of being let down and not looking forward to a whole season of Catherine Tate - at least Mr Tennant won't be letting the side down. Bring back Billy please!!
