1066 and all that...

This was Peter Butterworth's first appearance as The Monk in Doctor Who, and the first time we see another member of the Doctor's people. Butterworth is more restrained than in his later appearance in The Dalek's Master Plan, but the basic comedic elements are there. The story is not too fast paced and is concerned with a fundamental change in history, and is fairly light and not too demanding. There is no great drama though, this is really only light entertainment, and lacks the action of other stories.- Was this review helpful to you?

(4)time for quality WHO
By nurseboy (54 reviews) from oxford , 30 Apr 2012good solid classic WHO i really do rate these early efforts, the pacing and story is good there is no reliance on special effects (just as well ) and somehow the production values seem significantly better than they do in the 1980s. william hartnell is an excellent and underappreciated Dr. giving a deffining performance. sadly not to many of these original serise/Dr episodes survived.- Was this review helpful to you?

Excellent stuff
By a customer from Yorkshire , 30 Oct 2008William Hartnell really did make the part his own, and is much underrated by a modern audience obsessed with colourful visuals. If you want to watch a performance tailor-made for the limitations of television, you could do a lot worse than watch Hartnell at work. Forget the crackly picture and the wobbly sets and the fact that the actors never see the outside of a studio, despite supposedly being in Northumbria! This is a real classic and a shining light to be held up against the new era of Doctor Who, showcasing the original actor chewing the scenery with relish.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good fun
By arwsto (50 reviews) from Manchester , 29 Sep 2008I enjoyed this slice of early Who. William Hartnell was charming and mischievous by turns. Peter Purves was good as was Maureen O'Brien. The plot linking history and science fiction was interesting as was the fact that during Episode 3 William hartnell clearly had a week off. Peter Butterworth was entertaining as the Meddling Monk. I doubt the 7 year olds who watch the modern fast-paced Doctor Who with all its CGI whizz bangs would be able to stick with the slower pace of studio bound early 60's Who but I enjoyed it anyway.- Was this review helpful to you?
