  • This beautiful film is a sheer delight of perfection

    [Highly rated reviewer]

I could write for hours about the complete beauty and magnificence of this sprawling epic wonder of the silver screen.

It has everything coming together in perfect chemistry and perfection, under the master director ( better than all his other fantastic films ).

The cinematography is exquisite. So is the music. So is the story. So is the acting of both leading players and a host of supporting actors who could have won an Oscar in any year : Tom Courtney, Rod Steiger,Alec Guiness, Ralph Richardson, Geraldine Chaplin to name some.

But I will not write here at length. I'll just say that it is utter perfection, a poignant and marvellous epic that everyone should see.

  • beautiful, manic, unmissable

A beautiful, slightly manic and disturbing film. The attention to detail, massive scale and mind-blowing photography are overwhelming. There is a level of perfection to every single frame that perfectly captures the madness of the period and so many of this film’s images will stay with you forever. There is genius at work here but despite that it is a very hard film to like. I think that the emotional reserve of the film is due to the nature of its hero and the cynical detachment of the director. There is a cynical and obsessive control present in every single frame and very little passion anywhere. Nevertheless if you have any interest in how beautiful beautiful can be, or how the chilly personality of a master director can permeate every frame this is unmissable.

i first tried watching this fil while eating my tea and gave up as i realised half an hour in that i hadnt a clue what was going on, so i started again, this time concernating.

if you do concerntrate soley on the film it is incrdible, it lasts over three hours but you barely notice because you're become so absorbed into the stunning scenery and beautifully told story of lara (julie christie) and doctor/poet dr zhivago and their love in a surpressed russia.

definately one of my top 5 films!

  • Cradle to Grave Epic

Cradle to the grave epic - never to see the like again in modern times. Slightly over romantic version of bloody events that shaped history. You need a free Sunday afternoon to enjoy this classic movie, but at least you get a half time for tea and cake.

  • An Intensely Romantic Experience

    Rated - 5.0 stars

One of the most romantic films ever made, set in a time and place that prefigures much of our contemporary certitude which now too often substitutes for rational and emotionally honest discourse. Yuri Zhivago struggles with grand purpose to find his way through the noise and stupid violence while retaining an unswerving allegiance to beauty and art. My pastor in the sixties said it was a subversive film and condemned it, forbidding us to see it. Of course, I saw it and never looked back. The visual imagery in the winterized summer home is for me a memory that continues to evoke an intensely ironic sensation of those moments when lovers seem to only exist for each other yet remain tethered to the reality that gave birth to their passion. Has ever a film produced music that so precisely mirrors the drama? Its flaws and the many dated aspects are minor and ultimately contribute to this films power - at least for me.

A bit over rated. Great music and scenery.

An introduction to the Russian period by way of written print would have been useful.
