This film is the '...
By Noel Clay from Colchester, England , 29 Oct 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This film is the 'mostly true' story of Sonny Wortzik (in real life his name was John Wojtowicz), a married man who tries to rob a bank in order to pay for his male lovers sex change operation. If you're an Al Pacino fan you're in for a real treat -- this is certainly among his finest performances.
'Dog Day Afternoon' is a classic crime movie with some great comic moments in there as well. The fact that Sonny is gay isn't a huge issue in the film. He's just a man who's robbing a bank, and the film shows that his intentions or his sexuality aren't really as important as the media make them seem. On the whole he's portrayed as a sympathetic character, but there are hints of a darker side to his personality, such as the descriptions of him coming from his wife and lover.
From start to finish this is a very entertaining film, with plenty of memorable scenes and moments. If you're an Al Pacino fan or a fan of crime thrillers, odds are you'll love this.- Was this review helpful to you?

(73)One of Pacino's best.
By JimbobSquarePants (12 reviews) , 06 Mar 2013You don't expect the film to be able to carry on being so suspenseful and intense for two hours, but it actually manages to get even more so, the longer it goes on. Building up to a sweaty-palmed, edge-of-the-seat climax. Al Pacino practically carries the movie by himself, albeit with some solid supporting actors, and his performance is electrifying.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not the best Pacino film youll see
By Bassman71 (618 reviews) from Didsbury, England , 15 Aug 2012<Men rob bank, doesnt go to plan, take hostages, become media sensation, want plane and money to escape.
Dated and slightly silly heist film that apparently was based on real events from the early 1970s.
Al Pacino puts in quite a turn as Sonny Wortzik and its more or less a one man show with his interactions with the hostages, Police and partner as he tries to plan their escape.
Plot holes, dodgy over-acting and dialogue and quite a slow pace though make it not the best Pacino film youll see.>- Was this review helpful to you?

'gripping, funny and constantly suprising'
By AFM (12 reviews) from UK , 11 Apr 2012Sidney Lumet's 1975 film Dog Day Afternoon is not just a brilliant showcase for Al Pacino's acting talent but also a gripping, funny and constantly suprising picture with characteristically expert direction from Lumet . The plot concerns a robbery turn hostage situation with several unexpected twists along the way, made even more astonishing as the film is based on a true story. Overall I would strongly recommend the film, well worth checking out, especially for fans of Pacino.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great performance from ole Al !
By marinamay (3 reviews) from London , 15 Mar 2011Great movie about a bank hold up in the 70's (based on a true story) - you really feel the heat Sonny (Pacino) and Sal (John Cazale) get themselves into. Performances are brilliant and you find yourself from the beginning really hoping Sonny can pull it off ...- Was this review helpful to you?

Way Too Long....
By Jaario (91 reviews) from W Yorkshire , 02 Mar 2011I was looking forward to this movie however was very disappointed. There are moments of brilliance, but it just drags on and on and on..... we get the message, robbery became a farce and a joke... move on now...I was tired and relieved when this finished....probably more than the hostages taken by the robbers...
Needs time and concentration...and plenty of coffee- Was this review helpful to you?
