  • A lot of promise!

This series is similar to that of Quantum Leap when it first started. It shows a lot of promise, with story-lines showing off how good of actors the series has.

It is also not short of eye candy for both sexes. The main role played by Eliza Dushku is perfect for her. Her previous show of Tru Calling was good but didnt show off how diverse she can be.

As for the other members of the cast... what can I say, apart from believable and strong. The only flaw in this series is that, the current [main] story-line can only run so far. It would be worth watching, just to see what they come up with.

  • Carrots and Heart

Stick with it past the first couple of episodes and the heart of this series just grows and grows.

You'll love the characters when you get to know them and when the odd twist kicks in you'll love the show more and more.

Then they keep giving you carrots... a glimpse of the future here, a back-story there.

There's little obvious black and white so you're rooting for the Feds and you're rooting for the Dollhouse and you're not sure who the good guys are and you're sure that they can't be bad guys because you like them and it all messes with your mind with FUN and HEART.

If you like Sci Fi you'll love this.

  • Odd Concept Gets Clarity (Non Spoiler)

An interesting start to the series, even if Joss Whedon has said that the first 4 episodes were more like pilots. They seem to cover stand-alone stories with only hints at an overall story arc. However, this was necessary because they were unsure whether the rest of the series would even be made. Joss has said that from episode 5, the main story arc begins (DVD commentary disc 2). So, this first disc remains uncomplicated, easy access and useful for understanding the strange concepts the show is based around.

Strange and interesting as the concept is, you have four self-contained episodes that lay it out nicely for you. Most will enjoy 'the most dangerous game' episode at the very least. The rest will have started to understand the moral implications of the Dollhouse. This leads to debate over the non-doll characters, as we have startlingly different views of the ethics employed all under one roof.

In short, this is Joss Whedon writing at his worst, and it's still captivating. A bit slow since the main arc doesn't begin, but perhaps necessary considering the complex concepts on show. This is why it gets a 3.5/5 instead of the 5 I’m confident the series will earn as it progresses.

  • Not Quite Joe 90

For people of a certain age, like your reviewer, the premise behind this series will remind them of the late sixties animation Joe 90, but although the plots to some of the episodes in this season would make Joe 90 look intellectual, overall the series is very good as we get into the plot strands dealing with the mysterious Alpha, a doll whose imprinting has gone...awry, and the mysterious Rossum Corp who are bankrolling the various Dollhouses....

Worth watching the admittedly rare boring bits for the good ones and seeing how various little throwaways come back to haunt.

  • Too high expectations

I'm a sucker for anything by Joss Whedon. Buffy - great. Firefly - outstanding.

So when I heard about Dollhouse starring the gorgeous Eliza Dushku, it was a no-brainer.

The concept was intriguing but somehow the whole thing left me a little cold. The episode (#3 I think) in which she was protecting some dumb-ass, superficial 21st century Diva from a plastic girl-band had me, against the spirit of the series, wishing our heroine would fail in her mission and the screaming, petulant prima-donna would get horribly murdered.

I guess I find it hard to identify with a character when she's being manipulated to play a different part in each episode. I know that she begins to recover her real persona but, it felt a bit like a series of one-offs. Of course, Joss Whedon planned to take the series into many hidden depths and elaborate sub-plots but, once again, was terminated by the automatons who rule American TV.
